Red Hat, Inc., the pioneer in Open Source solutions has unveiled its new integrated product for storage solutions, the "Red Hat Storage Software Appliance" for Enterprises. The software can be deployed on a list of compatible hardware through an ISO image file. It offers support for mission critical and latency-sensitive data. It is even POSIX complaint, hence easing the deployment. The software makes use of GlusterFS 3.2, which provides scale-out storage solutions, without having to use the monolithic platforms, which are costly. The software comes as a balm on the fear that Open Source software isn?t capable of providing storage solutions for huge chunks of data.

This proves beneficial for organizations having multiple workloads such as near-line storage, backup and archival of data; digital media and content delivery networks. Earlier, Red Hat had announced the acquisition of Gluster, the Open Source storage solutions in October. The Red hat's new product is built specifically for Red hat Enterprise Linux 6.1.

The software also provides complete virtualization of the storage space and high-performance storage for data center or private cloud, without compromising on the performance on unstructured data. It offers Network protocol support, including Network File System (NFS), and Common Internet File System (CIFS).

Mr. Ranga Chari, General Manager of Storage, Red Hat said "These are exciting times for Red Hat and our ability to provide our first innovative storage offering to current and prospective customers."

He further said "We expect this announcement to be one of many that will enable organizations to reduce their storage costs while addressing the massive growth in unstructured data. We look forward to continuing to deliver the latest in open source storage appliances as the Storage Team continues to develop new solutions and innovative products to share."
In a nutshell, the Red Hat Storage Software Appliance is considered by the Enterprises as an alternative for the high cost proprietary software. Flexibility is an added feature that could impress the corporate consumer.
