Bangalore: The leading producer of virtual instrumentation software, National Instruments (NASDAQ:NATI), recently launched the NI SOM. With this introduction of revolutionary technology, NI made its first global product launch from India.

National Instruments (NI) is an America based company which has been propagating the revolutionary Virtual Instrumentation technology since its inception in 1976. With the current market cap of $4.02 billion, NI has spread over 50 countries globally. The brand believes in constant innovation and now it is taking a further step with its new NI SOM to the list of innovation.

NI SOM is set-up to blend Xilinx Zynq All Programmable system on a chip (SOC) with supporting components like memory on a small PCB. The new product customizes SOM helping design teams to trim down the time and the risk of developing customer software. Built based on the similar design model, the device enables design teams to deploy a reliable and complex embedded system faster. LabVIEW reconfigurable I/O architecture has been used previously in unmanned aerial vehicles, cataract surgery machines and on the like high-reliability applications.

Joel Shapiro, Leader for Marketing, Emerging Markets Region, NI says, ‘’The NI System on Module (SOM), combined with powerful LabVIEW libraries, enables engineers to transform their ideas into embedded products faster than any other tool available on the market.  Healthcare devices, smart machines, and other applications that require embedded technology will benefit as the NI SOM not only speeds up, but also bridges design, prototyping, and deployment with a single platform”.

The new technology is claimed to directly address the market pain and also to push the industrial automation market forward. With the launch, NI envisions to create a world of fresh possibilities for engineers, scientists and innovators across critical sectors, leading embedded technology to transform the future.

Dr. Jayaraj Joseph, Systems Architect, Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre says, “NI's graphical design tools have helped HTIC to rapidly develop functional, field testable proof of concepts in healthcare space that involves a variety of stakeholders. NI SOM has now allowed HTIC to take these functional prototypes to mass deployable solutions. NI SOM provides seamless integration with existing graphical development tool chain thereby allowing R&D centres to not only develop technology concepts, but also take them to deployment in a shorter time frame”.

“We have evaluated several SOMs and embedded SBCs, and there is no comparison to the software integration offered by NI,” says Sebastien Boria, R&D Mechatronics Technology Leader, Airbus. “We estimate that our development costs with the NI SOM are a tenth of the costs of alternative approaches because of the productivity gains of NI’s approach to system design, in particular to NI Linux Real-Time and LabVIEW FPGA”.
