ING has done a lot to expand itself all across the globe. In the process, it succeeded in developing its business in several countries, but its facing problem in some countries due to customization issues. Different countries have their own set of rules for running of a bank. Like different countries have different savings account rates to reward long-time customers.

So, is it possible for a global bank to have one back-end software system and process for transferring money into an account and also that supports all kinds of transfers, rather than having a different one in each of more than 25 countries in which it operates.

The answer is 'yes' but the question is 'how'?

So, ING came out with a new IT operating model to overcome this banking crisis, according to Chris Murphy, Editor, InformationWeek. This operating model puts every IT choice into one of four modes:

1. Shared: In this mode every IT element can be handled from a central organization.

2. Coordinated: In this each country is given the authority to use its own software approach provided the outcome is the same.

3. Isolated: Here, each country can use its own distinct IT approach.

4. Replicated: In this mode the core software infrastructure is run from a single country, but the local operation has the autonomy to create and change different products and names and they can even react to various regulations. So, different countries can have different savings account rates to reward long-time customers, the back-end software system and process for transferring money into an account remaining identical.
