Developing Enterprise Applications

Bangalore: CIOs are finding the allotted budget for enterprise app testing a herculean feat. According to agile data management provider Delphix, IT organizations are toiling in keeping up pace with the delivery requirements of enterprise application projects during the next 12 months, reports Apps Tech.

The research, ‘Enterprise Application Development MarketPulse,’ was conducted by IDG Research Services among 108 top-level IT executives at large global enterprises. The survey revealed some intriguing facts related to app-related issues vis-à-vis:

*86 percent of IT executives view app projects as a strategic priority.

*94 percent were of the opinion that delivering enterprise applications on allocated budget is too demanding.

*Further, an average of 28 projects was found to be delayed and/or over budget.

Tim Campos, Facebook CIO, quipped, “Database environments are constantly getting bigger and bigger, and they’re increasingly the bottleneck. If you have multiple projects going on, you have multiple copies of an environment you need to maintain. What ends up happening is you get an absolute sprawl in the database environment. With database virtualisation, we get better use of hardware and our people. It can accelerate our enterprise application development projects significantly in the same time frame.”

Rick Caccia, VP for Delphix, advocating the thoughts of Campos, stated, “Managing so many new applications and associated data is tough in any industry, but it's particularly difficult for healthcare with the upcoming cutover of all systems to the ICD-10 classification system. Some of our customers refer to it as 'Y2K for healthcare,' due to the significant work and deadline pressure involved. No one wants insurance providers to decline treatments because of inaccurate data codes. Gartner forecasts that the bulk of healthcare IT reform transition costs, some 60-70 percent, will be used for testing apps and the related data. Delphix can help.”

So, what are the prime enterprise apps the organizations are rooting for? The survey revealed that the top three were business process management apps at 52 percent, business intelligence at 43 percent and CRM (customer relationship management) apps at 41 percent.

As such it can be safely concluded that although CIOs have to surpass numerous hurdles with respect to enterprise applications, right from budgetary issues to timely delivery, they are willing to take a chance and dedicate their time as well as money.
