Bangalore: Hiring an IT candidate is a tough thing to do. You need to check whether they are good in coding, project handling, and co-operating in team work. If he / she shows negativity towards work life, it will lead to delay in project date or decline in the enthusiasm of other team members.

This is the reason you need to be careful while hiring an IT candidate. As a hiring manager, do you think you can easily recruit someone without a proper approach? It is said that to decrease the risk of bad hiring decisions, it is also important to prepare yourself before taking the interview.

Rich Hein stated in one of his article on CIO.com about the drawbacks which a hiring manager makes throughout the recruiting process. Some of the points are given below:

1. Telephonic screening- Before calling the candidates for attending the interview, make sure you have a telephonic round with them. This will help you save your time during interview and ensure you that they qualified for the next round of interview.

2. Prepare for interview- A hiring manager should also prepare themselves for taking the interview. Some people just go through the resume on the way to the interview; this is definitely not called preparation. While hiring an IT candidate, you should always make sure that you are evaluating all your candidates based on the same criteria. Measure one candidate against the other and if possible always stay connected with your social network.

3. Test candidates on their coding ability- If you are hiring a IT candidate always ask them questions related to coding and see how much programming knowledge they have got. This will help you to get a clear picture on how they react towards solving a problem in IT domain.

4. Creating an irrelevant job description- A proper job description can save most of the IT companies in time, but a poor one may cost you very badly. While posting a job description be very clear and specific. And don’t forget to add soft skills because that knowledge too is essential in the field of IT.

5. Do not ignore the corporate culture- Even if you find a candidate who is fit for a particular post in your organization; do not ignore the most important aspect. If he/ she can't fit the corporate culture, then you must think again. If they turn out to be cultural misfit, then it would be better not to hire them.  They are not the ones who will prosper in your organization over time.

However, some candidates may have some skill issues. Try placing them in another position where he / she could excel. Atleast the amount of time, energy and resource that you have invested will not in vain.
