The Surge of Google with Cloud

Bangalore: Google’s CIO, Ben Fried seems to be advocating the theory – Time is Money – by pitching for cloud computing, citing the positive results from his company to motivate his counterparts to incorporate the same in their work environment, reports Paul McDougall of Information Week.

At the Interop Conference & Expo, a UBM TechWeb event, in New York City, where Fried addressed the event as the Keynote Speaker, he was of the opinion that the current software model which most of the enterprises follow is a waste of the corporate money when it comes to renewals, upgrades, and maintenance and licensing costs.

Companies failing to upgrade the prevailing system of software, it leads to unwarranted rise in expenditure for the organization. “Doing nothing is so expensive. You are paying, and paying, and paying ... there is a better way,” said Fried.

Apparently, Google used to operate on seven different email systems before switching to a cloud-based Gmail system. This resulted in a greater flexibility in the work environment for the IT staff, who could now devote more time towards strategic innovation and at the same time facilitating collaboration among the users. This new wave of collaboration has even so widely accepted across the organization that Google had to make desk phones optional.

Moreover, other initiatives by Google, such as providing the best of devices for the employees to work on, ensures loyalty from the staff as it shows plainly that the employers care, has resulted in a positive outlook for the company. Google has also taken up other fresh trends such as identifying the software or devices that are hardly used by the employees and putting in place procedures that make it easier for the IT staff to discard.

Thus, companies all over can take away a few pointers from the world’s second most valuable company by inducting cloud in their work dynamics.
