CIOs hesitant to continue the same role

It's hard to believe, but yes, as per an article by Julian Goldsmith from Gartner, which included more than 2,300 CIOs all across the globe, reveals that 55% of the CIOs don't wish to continue the same role in their next career shift. The survey clearly stated that 20% of the CIOs wanted to move into a more business oriented profile, while 17% wanted to move into a consultancy domain, 18% of them wanted to quit the job and retire forever. The survey went on to show that out of 14% of the CIOs who felt they are doing well with their job, only two-third of them wish to continue in the same domain in their next career shift.

The study suggests that role of CIOs is changing and they need to deliver on many grounds. On one hand the CIOs are expected to improve the products and satisfy customer requirements and on the other hand they are weakened by their own business- line colleagues to take control of their IT requirements, be it the IT budget or completion of the project on time.

The most important goal of CIOs is to satisfy the needs of the customers based on their experiences, but the CIOs are not able to deliver that says Dave Aron in computerworld.co.nz. They are stuck managing legacy investment, he added.

The CIOs seem to lose affection in their roles as they no longer have control over the cutting-edge technological developments. They also prioritized some of the major technologies like security and social media lower down the list in the survey.

However, a recent study shows that the technology is back on the cards this year and some IT projects will be headed by other senior executives in the company instead of the CIOs.
